Duties That Security Officers Must Take With Tradespersons Who Arrive
Like any working environment, a hospital will routinely have tradespersons coming and going to get work done. Many hospitals are at least partially under a constant state of renovation, which means that electricians, carpenters, and other contractors will frequently visit the hospital to work during the day. If you're a hospital security officer, you're responsible to a degree for these individuals and must take a series of steps when each tradesperson arrives. Here are some things that you'll need to do.
Confirm Who Should Be There
You should confer with the hospital's maintenance department or whatever department oversees the work of tradespersons so that you can get a list of who is scheduled to arrive each day. It may not be possible to get contractors' names, but you should be able to get the name of the company that will be supplying the contractors. When these people arrive, you need to check their IDs to ensure that they're supposed to be on the scene and then sign them in. You'll also need to remind them to visit the security desk at the end of the day so that you can sign them out. Your hospital may have guest passes that each tradesperson is to wear, so you'll also be responsible for handing them out when people arrive and then collecting them at the end of the day.
Escort Them As Needed
If a tradesperson has been at the hospital multiple times, they will probably know where to go for work. However, this won't always be the case, which means that you may need to escort some of the contractors from the reception area of the hospital to wherever they'll be working. Few people know the layout of the hospital better than security officers, so you can get these individuals to their proper location quickly and efficiently so that they can start to work.
Remind Them Of Hospital Policies
On occasion, you may need to approach the tradespersons and remind them of hospital policies such as keeping their voices low. While their work itself might be loud, some contractors may be in the habit of yelling back and forth as they work so that they can be heard over their tools. If you get noise complaints, perhaps from the medical professionals who are working in the area, you'll need to ask the contractors to try to respect the hospital's volume rules.
