If you are considering buying a two story home and you have never lived in one, then you really do have a lot of things that you should think about. You may not understand that having that second story can really change the way things work in your home and it can add some extra concerns. However, that second floor may also offer you some positive features. It will be up to your family to decide whether toe pros or the cons win out. Here are just a few of the things you need to realize may change when you live in a two story home instead of a single story one:
The family may stay in their rooms a bit more
You may not expect this to happen, but a lot of families find that when they move into a two story home it ends up causing at least some of the family members to spend a little more time in their bedrooms rather than out in the common living area. However, it could also have the reverse effect in some families where some family members end up in the living room a lot, which can be great as long as they clean up after themselves!
There will be new noises to get used to
When you have a second story to your home, there will be walking, running and the occasional thud on the ceiling when you are downstairs. If one of the bedrooms happens to be downstairs under an upstairs room, then the person in that room may need to get used to those noises, depending on the loudness of the person in the upstairs room, as well as the way the home is built. Some homes allow for more noise to be heard, where there are also others that are built so the noise is minimal.
There may be added safety concerns
When you have a two story home you will want to make sure you set the family down and go through some drills, just in case there is an emergency such as a fire. You should also purchase fire extinguishers for different rooms throughout the house and make sure that all of the upstairs bedrooms have fire escape ladders just in case of an emergency. These are ladders that grip onto the wall and fall down the house so the occupant can climb out safely and quickly.
There will be more physical excursion getting to some parts of the house
When you have to go upstairs and down stairs throughout the day it can be a great form of exercise. However, if someone in the family has certain issues, such as knee injuries, then this can also be something that will be hard on them.
